Three Signs That The Spirit Of God Has Left You

Is it possible for the Spirit of the Lord to leave you?

The Lord said that His Spirit will not always strive with men forever (Genesis 6:3). Although the Lord is long-suffering He does not tolerate sin.

The Holy Spirit will convict you of sin and encourage you to repent.

But, if you harden your heart and continue to walk in presumptuous sin God will eventually leave you to your reprobate mind (Romans 1:28).

How will you know if this has happened to you?

Three pieces of evidence that the Spirit of God has departed from your life

1.  A period of dryness in your life

The Lord is no longer speaking to your heart and in spite of your many prayers, the Lord does not hear you.

There is a lack of revelation from God so you seek directions from prophets, horoscope, stars and zodiac signs and psychic.

2. Constant trials with no period of rest.

When the Spirit of God is no longer with you, you will become vulnerable to the attack of the enemy and your trials will seem endless.

The spirit of fear will torment your life.

3. You return to your sinful lifestyle

If you feel compelled to return to your former sinful lifestyle, the Spirit of God is no longer with you.

The Holy Spirit will only live in a clean heart.

Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully. (Psalms 24:3-4)

The man who lost the Spirit of God

King Saul, the first king of Israel, found himself in this low position when the Spirit of God left him due to his disobedience.

The Holy Spirit who once brought comfort and peace to Saul was replaced by a distressing spirit that brought confusion, restlessness, and periods of insanity.

Only the soothing music from David’s harp could drive away the distressing spirit and console the king (1 Samuel 16:23).

Eventually, there came a time when the Philistines threatened to attack and destroy Israel so the king sought the Lord for guidance (1 Samuel 28).

But, despite Saul’s prayers and sacrifices, God did not answer. The Lord had permanently rejected him.

Consequently, the king decided to seek advice from a medium. He was returning to the spiritualists whom he had chased out of the land.

The prophet Samuel had died and was buried, so Saul disguised himself and visited one of these mediums to bring up the spirit of Samuel. He had returned to the dead spirits.

Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God. (Leviticus 19:31 NKJV)

During the incantation, the medium was shocked when the real spirit of Samuel appeared. She was expecting a familiar spirit from the devil.

Notwithstanding, the prophet Samuel was outraged that Saul had used such a media to disturb his rest and he pronounced judgment upon Saul and his household.

Terror seized the king when he heard of his impending doom and he refused to eat even though he was weak with hunger.

However, the woman along with Saul’s men managed to persuade him to eat.

Can you see the trail of despair that follows someone when the Spirit of God has left him?

First, an evil spirit takes residence in your life. Then your life is plagued with confusion and restlessness.

The Lord no longer hears your prayers and you resort to witchcraft. You then become vulnerable in the hands of the enemies.

If you find yourself in this position there is still hope for you because Jesus Christ came to save sinners regardless of the state in which they find themselves.

  1. Good post, Beverley. We can always have a change of heart and tell our Father God we’re sorry for what we did, and not to bring it up again, for He’s forgivin us and has cast it as far as the east is from the west. Then draw nigh to Him, and He will draw nigh to us. Tell Him how much we love Him, for He wants our genuine heart felt love toward Him, which is blessing Him, which in turn He’ll bless us abundantly. This is the simplicity of the Gospel.

  2. The Lord is a God of mercy and His mercy is everlasting. So, He is always willing and ready to forgive us when we call upon Him. Thank you, Susa, for your valuable input. Much blessings to you.

  3. Good reminder that although God is faithful, patient and enduring in love, we do need to make a choice to be for Him or against Him. Choosing Jesus is a daily action.

  4. If someone feels that the spirit of God has left them, what do they need to do in order to have a close relationship with him again? I know a group of people that have experienced this or something similar to this, and I’d like to be able to help them. I myself have dealt with this and am mostly restored, but still lack the feeling of peace and wholeness. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks and have a good day!

  5. I used to walk with God or should I say I tried to walk with God I was brought up in church. I have been in and out of church many times in my life . I’ve made a mess out of my life I honestly have due to drugs drinking Multiple marriages sexual sins. Now I have fallen into a depression much like king Saul did in the Bible. My life literally shows it . I have been trying to pray go to church and read but I’m so overwhelmed. I have had preachers and Christians alike try to warn me but Everytime I would fall right back into sin. I have given up the drugs and drinking and immorality. I still struggle with nicotine addiction which I am trying to quit . I don’t know what to do anymore I’m 54 and my mind is filled with the thought that God is completely done with me and that my mind is reprobate . I have had people tell me that a reprobate mind would not want to come back . I don’t believe that I honestly think that a reprobate mind is the more like a lunatic or turned over to a manic depressive state . Please don’t think that I’m trying to negate anything about God for he is truly good just and His word is true. He truly is but there are warnings in the Bible about people like Esau who sold his birthright for a bowl of soup. God took his spirit away from king Saul as well. Again I’m not trying to say anything bad about God. Just saying my life and the way it has turned out is maybe a warning to others not to be like me . I hope it is God is not mocked for what a man sows that he shall reap.

    • God is not finished with you as yet. From the fact that you are willing to share your life with us, it means you have a repentant heart. Pour out your heart to God, and He will forgive you. You only need to believe that He has forgiven you. I also think that you need to join a support group and have weekly counseling. I will keep you in my prayers 🙏

  6. Great post. I enjoyed reading. I do have a question. You said that one who finds themselves in this position still has hope through Jesus Christ. I always believed that we could be forgiven of anything. However, in these past two years my life has taken a turn that I never saw coming. It appears that I have been cut from the vine. God doesn’t answer my prayers, I can’t hear Him or sense His presence anywhere. When this all happened, my family we came together and prayed sought counsel but it’s like Jesus is not letting me come back from this one. I have no fruits of the spirit, I have no power, no light, no conviction, no fear or any feeling of any kind. All has been snatched. I know I’m in a dangerous place and when I realized what happened, I immediately knew that Jesus was the missing piece. How can one get back to God if everything points to Holy Spirit departing forever from that person? I am absolutely miserable. I have no sound mind, all of it is filled with unrighteousness and I absolutely hate it, but nothing I do, whether it’s prayer or reading my word gets me back to Him. My memory is bad. I can’t remember the word of God. My mind and thoughts are blank and I cannot feel my heart anymore. Please I need help on this.

    • Hi Kryssy. I do believe there is hope in God, and there is no sin that is too bad that God does not forgive. In your situation, I think it is best to be among Christian believers who can encourage and pray for you. The Lord promises never to leave or forsake you, so even if you don’t feel like He is near you, He is, and you have to believe this by faith. I will continue to pray for you that you will be delivered from the past that is affecting you. May God bless you.

  7. Sadly I feel as though the Holy Spirit has left me again. In 2020, I went through a spiritual attack that when I doubted the Holy Spirit was in me, the enemy poured something spiritual into my spirit and the Holy Spirit left shortly after. It was like waves and waves of power leaving from within me. It was the worst experience of my life. My life was then marked by emptiness, spiritual dryness, no ability to flow in tongues and severe depression. This continued for two years until on Sunday the 14th August 2022, I was singing a love song to the Holy Spirit that morning and to my surprise He responded and He returned into me. This miracle was the greatest miracle of my life because after two years of spiritual dryness, I found myself able to flow in tongues again and had supernatural joy and able to experience and connect with God again. This miracle however lasted about 90 days. I’m not 100% sure of what I did wrong but I do remember letting thoughts affect me again. I was put back into hospital, against my will, and it was there I felt the Holy Spirit leave me again. I don’t know why when I needed Him the most, He would leave me.

I still love God but I can’t connect with Him like before. It’s been another 2 and a half years and I’m still waiting for the Holy Spirit to return to me. I can’t flow in tongues right now and I feel empty and dry. I know that God is a God of hope, that’s what I am holding onto. He promised to be faithful.

    • Ephesians 3:17 states, “So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.” You will know that the Holy Spirit dwells in your heart by faith and not by feelings. I suggest you paray the paruer in Ephesians 3:17-21 and believe that God dwells in your heart. Thanks for sharing your testimony, and have a blessed day.
