God told Moses at the burning bush that His name is “I AM” (Exodus 3:14)
What is the significance of this name and how important is this name in our daily life?
The name I AM is defined in the Strong’s Hebrew and Greek lexical dictionary as: “it come to pass or come into existence,” taken from the Hebrew word hayah.
In the English language am is the first person indicative of be.
On the other hand, be means in the English language to exist or live. It also means to take place, happen or occur.
Another meaning of be is to occupy a place or position and to continue or remain as before.
I is a singular pronoun used to refer to the speaker when speaking about him or herself.
Therefore, when God gave Moses the name I AM, He was specifically telling Moses of His omnipotence.
God is not a created being, and neither does He have a mother nor a father. He does not have the begining of days or the end of life (Hebrews 7:3).
God existed before the begining of time and He occupied a place of supreme power and authority and will continue to remain thus until eternity.
God is indeed the first and the last (Isaiah 44:6; 48:12; Revelation 1:11; 22:13).
Therefore, the name I AM defines God’s character and authority.
When God speaks to us, He calls His name to reinforce and remind us of His supremacy.
