The Best Of The Oil And Wine

5–8 minutes

The Uses of Oil in Scripture

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:14)

People, places, and things were anointed in the Old Testament period to signify holiness, purity, and cleanliness.

What was oil used for in the Bible?

The most important biblical use of the oil is for anointing and to use as fuel to light the lamps (Exodus 25:6).

These are the best uses of oil.

The Oil was Used as a Memorial of Divine Holiness

Jacob anointed the stone he used as a pillow after dreaming of a ladder ascending into the heavens.

In his dream, the Lord reinforced His covenant of blessings upon Jacob and his descendants.

The anointed stone pillow becomes a memorial of holiness. Thus, Jacob called the place Bethel, meaning house of God. (See Genesis 28) (Strong Hebrew/Greek concordance).

The Oil was used to Reinforce the Law of the Alter

The Oil was Used to Establish Covenantal Blessings

The place where God changed Jacob’s and name from supplanter (deceiver) to a soldier of God (Israel) was anointed as a memorial before God.

Thus, the covenant of blessings was sealed forever (Genesis 35).

The Oil was Used to Anoint the Offering for Sacrifice

The sacrifice of thanksgiving consisted of cakes with oil and wafers anointed with oil (Leviticus 2:1;7:12).

The Oil was Used to Consecrate and Sanctify

The priests were anointed to minister before God. Aaron and his sons were all anointed, and even their clothes were also anointed with oil (Exodus 29:21; Leviticus 8:12,30).

When the anointing oil was upon their head, they could not leave the presence of God in the tabernacle, or else they would die (Leviticus 10:7).

The Oil was Used to Cleanse a Person of Diseases

The oil was used as part of the cleansing rituals for persons who had been healed of leprosy (Leviticus 14).

The Oil was Used in the Holy Ointment

Oil was used as a base to mix spices into a holy ointment to anoint the tabernacle and all its utensils and furnishings, thereby sanctifying them (Exodus 30).

The Oil was used as Fuel for the Lamps in the Tabernacle

Pure olive oil was used in the lamp in the tabernacle. The Lord required that the lamp should never burn out (Exodus 27:20; 35:14).

The Uses of Wine in Scripture

The wine typically symbolizes covenants, celebrations, and rewards. Its symbolism can be seen in the New Testament.

What was wine used for in the Bible?

These are the best uses of wine.

The Wine Symbolizes the New Covenant

The wine was a symbol of the new covenant of blessings that was promised through the seed of Abraham.

The Wine was Used as a Drink Offering to God

The wine was used as a drink offering as a part of the seven-day sacrifice of the altar of atonement (Numbers 15).

The Wine was Used to Celebrate Before the Lord.

When the children of Israel inherited the Promise Land they were told to give their tithes and offerings to the tabernacle.

They were also required to eat, drink wine, and rejoice before the Lord.

The Wine Represents a Reward from God

The best of the wine is part of your reward when you honor the Lord with the first fruits of your increase.

The Importance of the Oil and Wine in the Church

The Lord Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection ushered in a new covenant.

This new covenant is spiritual and it is based on faith and grace.

The Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled all the functions of the literal oil and wine.

Therefore, when you receive the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart He will anoint you with the Holy Spirit who will perform all the functions of the oil and wine in your life.

Thus, the anointing oil of the Holy Spirit will cleanse you of all diseases. The Holy Spirit will sanctify you and make you holy.

The anointing oil of the Holy Spirit reinforces the law of the altar and seals the covenant of blessings in your life.

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit in your life will be a memorial of divine holiness unto the Lord.

When you become the oil and wine through your total obedience to the Holy Spirit you will receive full blessing and protection from the Lord.

The oil is used to symbolize healing and deliverance.

If you are sick, call for the elders and let them pray for you and anoint you with oil. The prayer of faith will heal the sick (James 5:14)

all-the-best

With the manifestation of the Holy Spirit of God in your life, you have received the best of the oil and wine.

Therefore, give the Lord the best of the oil and wine.
