The Best Of The Oil And Wine

And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart. (Psalms 104:15)

The Best of the Oil

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:14)

The most important biblical use of the oil is for anointing and to use as fuel to light the lamps (Exodus 25:6).

People, places, and things were anointed in the Old Testament period to signify holiness, purity, and cleanliness.

The oil was used as a memorial of divine holiness

Jacob anointed the stone he used as a pillow after dreaming of a ladder ascending into the heavens.

In his dream, the Lord reinforced His covenant of blessings upon Jacob and his descendants.

The anointed stone pillow becomes a memorial of holiness. Thus Jacob called the place Bethel, meaning house of God. (See Genesis 28) (Strong Hebrew/Greek concordance)

The oil was used to reinforce the law of the altar

An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee. (Exodus 20:24)

The oil was used to establish a covenant of blessings

The place where God changed Jacob’s and name from supplanter (deceiver) to a soldier of God (Israel) was anointed as a memorial before God.

Thus the covenant of blessings was sealed forever. (See Genesis 35)

And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. (Genesis 35:14)

The oil was used to anoint the offering for the sacrifice

The sacrifice of thanksgiving consisted of cakes with oil and wafers anointed with oil (See Leviticus 2:1; 7:12)

And unleavened bread, and cakes unleavened tempered with oil, and wafers unleavened anointed with oil: of wheaten flour shalt thou make them. (Exodus 29:2)

The oil was used to consecrate and sanctify

The priests were anointed to minister before God. Aaron and his sons were all anointed and even their clothes were also anointed with oil. (See Exodus 29:21; Leviticus 8:12,30).

When the anointing oil was upon their head they could not leave the presence of God in the tabernacle or else they would die. (See Leviticus 10:7)

Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him. (Exodus 29:7)

Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him: I am the Lord. (Leviticus 21:12)

The oil was used to cleanse a person of diseases.

The oil was used as part of the cleansing rituals for persons who were healed from leprosy. (See Leviticus 14).

And the remnant of the oil that is in the priest’s hand he shall pour upon the head of him that is to be cleansed: and the priest shall make an atonement for him before the Lord. (Leviticus 14:18)

The oil was used in the holy ointment

Oil was used as a base to mix the spices into a holy ointment to anoint the tabernacle and all its utensils and furnishings to sanctify and make them holy. (See Exodus 30)

The oil was used as fuel for the lamps in the tabernacle

Pure olive oil was used in the lamp in the tabernacle. The Lord required that lamp should never burn out (See Exodus 27:20; 35:14)

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)

The best of the wine

The new covenant

The wine was a symbol of the new covenant of blessings that was promised through the seed of Abraham.

And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high (Genesis 14:18-19)

The wine was used as a drink offering to God

The wine was used as a drink offering as a part of the seven-day sacrifice of the altar of atonement.

And with the one lamb a tenth deal of flour mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil; and the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering. (Exodus 29:40)

See Numbers 15.

The wine was used to celebrate before the Lord.

When the children of Israel inherited the Promise Land they were told to give their tithes and offerings to the tabernacle.

They were also required to eat, drink wine, and rejoice before the Lord.

And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the Lord thy God always. (Deuteronomy 14:23)

As a reward from the Lord

The best of the wine is part of your reward when you honor the Lord with the first fruit of your increase.

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. (Proverbs 3:9-10)

The winepress signifies the wrath of God against the enemy.

And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. (Revelation 14:19)

The use of the oil and wine in the Church

The Lord Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection ushered in a new covenant.

This new covenant is spiritual and it is based on faith and grace.

The Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled all the functions of the literal oil and wine.

Therefore, when you receive the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart He will anoint you with the Holy Spirit who will perform all the functions of the oil and wine in your life.

Thus, the anointing oil of the Holy Spirit will cleanse you of all diseases. The Holy Spirit will sanctify you and make you holy.

The anointing oil of the Holy Spirit reinforces the law of the altar and seals the covenant of blessings in your life.

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit in your life will be a memorial of divine holiness unto the Lord.

When you become the oil and wine through your total obedience to the Holy Spirit you will receive full blessing and protection from the Lord.

And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. (Revelation 6:6)

The oil is used to symbolize healing and deliverance.

If you are sick, call for the elders and let them pray for you and anoint you with oil. The prayer of faith will heal the sick (James 5:14)

all-the-best

With the manifestation of the Holy Spirit of God in your life, you have received the best of the oil and wine.
