The Golden Image

I have always been intrigued by the image of gold that king Nebuchadnezzar erected in the plain of Dura in Babylon (Daniel 3).

After he erected the image he requested that all his princes and rulers attended the dedication ceremony where he commanded the people to bow down and worship this image when they heard the sound of the music.

Anyone who did not worship the golden image would be killed in the fiery furnace.

Some of the questions concerning this image that boggles my mind I will share with you my fellow blogging friends to get your views.

I recognized that most of you have an indepbt knowledge of the Word of God and so your input is valuable to me and my readers.

The height of king Nebuchadnezzar’s image is three score or sixty cubits and its breadth is six cubits. This is 66.

The prophet John had a vision of a second beast that arise from the earth (Revelation 13:11-18).

This beast exercised all the miraculous powers of the first beast in his sight or presence.

The second beast told the dwellers on earth to create an image to the first beast.

He gave life to this image and commanded that those who do not worship the image of the beast be killed.

He also caused everyone to receive a mark in their hands and foreheads so that they could buy and sell. The number of this beast is 666.

1.  Do you see the similarity between Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image and the second beast?

2.  What is the connection between the golden image and this beast?

3.  Is there a reason why the image is 66 while the beast 666?

4.  Why were the people ordered to worship the golden image only when they heard the music?

5.  In the previous chapter (Daniel 2), God gave the king a dream of a great statue that prophesied the events that would take place in the latter days.

Do you think that Satan inspired the king to erect this golden statue in defiance against God’s prophetic Word?

6.  Many people have wondered where was Daniel during this time? Why wasn’t he with the three Hebrew men who did not bow to the image?

As I carefully read the passage I realized that Daniel was given a higher position in Babylon than the other three young men.

Daniel sat in the gate of the king while the others were in charge of the affairs of the province of Babylon (Daniel 2:49).

The position of Daniel was one of higher authority next to the king.

In the previous chapter when Daniel revealed the dream and interpretation to the king, he fell down and worshipped Daniel.

The king revered Daniel as a god so most naturally he was not required to worship this image.

The book of Daniel is remarkable and I believe the events that occurred in this book are a type and shadow of the events that are occuring in the world today.

I, therefore, value your views and opinions on this.

Many theories and opinions are on the internet and Youtube regarding the beast of revelation and Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image.

However, I prefer to hear your views.

Thank you for reading and commenting.

God bless you.

  1. I have also heard conflicting views from many sources. It is one of those things we have to pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit and re-read all Scripture concerning this… in Daniel, Revelation, Any other area. I prefer getting my information from God and not flawed commentators anyway.😄❤

  2. Beverley, you ask questions that are possibly relevant but I have not previously considered them. But the obvious appears to us, that Satan is the source of both images, and they would then both definitely be to steal worshipers from God at a great price to any God worshiper. In Daniels day most bowed down, and so it appears that it will be in the Tribulation period on earth. As for today men are becoming reprobate, but they do not yet know that this will lead to lead to slavery and worship of this beast that today they are helping to create. None of this speaks to your questions which I certainly hope some of your readers will help provide answers to. Thanks for your thoughtful posts.

    • Hi Jerry. On closer inspection I realised that Daniel 2 did not clearly state that God gave Nebuchadnezzar the first dream. However, due to the nature of the dream in Daniel 2, it is hard to believe that Satan would want to warn the king about prophetic events in the latter days. This dream reminded me of the dreams of Pharoah regarding the impending famine in Egypt. I believe those dreams were from the Lord to elevate Joseph and to prepare Egypt for an impending disaster. You have made some valuable points and I appreciate them. Blessings to you.

  3. I have to admit Beverley I am no scholar and have little insight of value that can answer these questions. What I can say is that the statues are indicative of ‘self’ run amok, both then and now. 666 is the number of ‘self’ and is in direct opposition to God. Erego ‘self’ and it’s grandiose idol to itself will be inevitably destroyed. Most people make an idol to ‘self’ but very, very few recognize it for what it is.

Sorry I cannot add any more. I am not skilled in these things. All we can pray is that God would open the eyes of believers to see the idol of ‘self’ in their own lives so they can tear it down.

    • Homer, you have made some valuable points. I am no scholar myself but I do believe that the Holy Spirit will interpret the scriptures for us. As you stated 666 can also be interpreted as self because six is the number for man according to the Bible. It is the selfish nature of man that wants to glorify himself and put himself upon a pedestal to be worshipped. This can clearly be seen in the world today. Money and material possessions rule and people will kill you if you are blocking their way to achieve their selfish goals. As you stated we have to pray that God open their eyes to the truth. Thank you and God bless you.

  4. You raise many excellent questions and that is a good thing! We should wrestle with the Scriptures often. And though I will offer an opinion as to where was Daniel when the 3 friends were brought before the King, I will gently remind us all the first place we should always go with our questions is to God Himself. Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate your heart and mind, to bring to light answers to our questions.
With regard to Daniel’s whereabouts, the end of chapter 2 tells us that Daniel has been appointed ruler of the entire province of Babylon and at his request, his 3 friends have been made administrators. The rest is now speculation on my part: The three friends would have been more ‘hands on’ in the daily business of the government, thus making them more visible to those that turned them in. Daniel may well have been in the palace, a huge place, and therefore removed from the daily goings on as he would have been insulted along with the king from the outside world.
Blessings to you keep on asking questions,
    Pastor Chuck

    • Thank you Pastor Chuck. You have made some valid points. I do agree that we have to consult the Lord first for the interpretation of the scriptures. I also agree with you that the last verse of chapter 2 clearly stated that Daniel had a different and I assume higher position than his other three friends. Thank you for sharing and may God bless you.

  5. I’m not going to reveal much, but I will say this in short, the dream king Nebuchadnezzar had and the visions of Daniel correlate with each other. King Nebuchadnezzar wondered while He was in His bed (Daniel 2:28;29;36-39), what will become of his great empire after him. He was shown the whole history of the world in a really brief nutshell (from the fall of Babylon to the fall of Babylon of the Book of Revelation 17-18).

Revelation’s Babylon is not the same place obviously as kings Nebuchadnezzar’s city, but the Revelations Babylon will be the capital city of the world where the antichrist will reign and rule out of. And the visions Daniel seriously gives real details how this unfolds along with the Book of Zechariah, Ezekiel and so forth

    • Hi Brother Bates. Thank you for your informative insights into the image of Nebuchadnezzar. I also agree that the prophetic books of Daniel, Zechariah and Ezekiel all related to Revelation. But, I strongly believe that the Babylon in Revelation represents the spiritual kingdom of Satan. At the same time, it could also be a literal kingdom. Thank you for sharing and God bless you.

  6. I have a question. What is the picture you posted? The one of a golden statue? Where is that? As far as the rest of what you shared, that is a lot to think about, but you have some really good questions. I have much I could share, but I will have to inquire of the Lord first to see that I share only what he wants me to share. But, thank you for bringing this to the forefront.

    • His Sue. The picture was taken from pixabay free image. It was just a golden statue of a man. I should have labelled it as such. I am looking forward to hear your views on the subject. Thank you for sharing.
