The Powers That Are Against You

This post was inspired by Charles Lawson who preached on the powers that are against us as Christians. (March 6, 2016)

I will give you the link to the Youtube below. Pastor Lawson message was taken from Ephesians 6:12.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12)

Have you ever wondered why during political campaigns in a country or when there is a newly elected president some major diabolical catastrophe occurred?

Take, for example, the two back to back mass shootings that occurred in the USA last week during this current political campaign.

My heart goes out to the victims’ families, friends and the communities involved. I pray that the Lord will comfort and strengthen them during this time.

Why do these shootings occurred during a time when there are tense debates regarding immigration policies?

Another example is during a period of confusion in the BVI between ‘expats and belongers‘ there was a horrific killing of a resident.

Later, the news reported that the police charged a man from St. Vincent for the crime.

Do you think these are coincidences or plots?

The Bible states that Satan prowls like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. (See 1 Peter 5:8)

How does Satan know who to devour?

Satan knows his prophets and followers and occasionally he will sacrifice one of them to further his cause. Satan does this because he is a liar and a trickster.

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar and the father of it. (John 8:44)

However, Satan does not work on his own. He has many accomplices.

These accomplices are humans who contact him directly when they want to manipulate the outcome of certain events whether politically or socially within a country.

This is an example of spiritual wickedness in high places and these are the powers that Christians are up against.

We have a real battle going on in the spiritual realm between good and evil and we need to be aware of this so that we can be prepared.

How can we fight against these high powers?

By putting on the whole armor of God.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. (Ephesians 6:13-18)

You cannot fight partially prepared.

You cannot overcome principalities and powers if you only have a sword in your hand but you are not wearing your helmet or breastplate.

What do you think will happen?

You will be dead within a second by the fiery darts of the enemy and your sword will fall by the side of your dead body.

This is what is happening among many Christians.

They have their sword (bible) in their hands but are spiritually dead.

You can only be victorious when you are clad in the entire armor.

As a matter of fact, when you are fully suited you will not have to lift up your hands in defense.

You only need to stand still and watch the spiritual forces of darkness fall by your side. This is the power of being fully armored and prepared.

Therefore, when you are fully prepared you do not need to be afraid of principalities, powers, rulers of darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places that are against you.

  1. Thanks, Beverley, for reminding us. We always need our full armour on, and we need to be alert. Attacks from the enemy can come in ways we do not expect. We should always expect the unexpected, and stay focused on Jesus. In him, we have the victory.

    • Amen. Expect the unexpected. The Bible said we are to be sober and be vigilant. Those are two power words that as Christians we ought to be. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Amen! Such a powerful reminder that we can’t afford to walk around with an armor. We must be armored up at ALL times. I once heard someone say this, “casual Christians will become casualties.”

  3. Bev, I hope this helps and encourages your readers.

The LORD gives us the helmet of salvation to protect the thoughts that enter our mind and direct every action that we take through His Spirit giving us direction with every breath we take. If we are not willing to stand with Him in the spiritual battles of this world, how do we expect to win the war and share in His victory?

Chazak Chazak V’nitzchazek; Be Strong, Be Strong, Let Us Be Strengthened! As a reminder of where our strength truly comes from we say this in our congregation at the completion of each of the first five books of the Bible.

Chazak – Be strong. In thinking about strength, we encounter challenges, obstacles, and pressures. To be strong we need to have ourselves grounded in Jesus, the Chief Cornerstone of our faith.

Chazak—we are strong when we have people we can count on. Our families, our communities, our kehillot (congregations) are all sources of strength.

V’nitchazek – We must strengthen each other. It’s not only important to know the truth, we are also tasked with speaking the truth in love as we share it with others.

Remember we are not responsible for how others respond—we are only responsible to “press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us,” Philippians 3:14.

    • Hi Candice. Your words always encourage me and my readers. You have given us added information that are further reinforcement. Our hearts and mind need to be protected from evil influences and our feet should only walk in the way of peace. Thank you for sharing these revelations to us. You are a blessing to us!
