As Thanksgiving ends, most people look forward to the Christmas season.
Christmas should be a time to reflect upon the past year and to meditate upon the goodness of God for blessing you throughout the year.
However, many people miss the true concept of Christmas and are only focusing on shopping and more shopping.
The intense shopping begins on Black Friday and culminates on Cyber Monday.
Statistics showed that Christmas retail sales for 2021 has been forecasted to grow a whopping $843.4 billion USD, which is approximately 8.5% increased since last year 2020. (Statista)
Chances are your hard earn money will be part of this statistics.
Only the merchants get richer during the Christmas season and the consumers get significantly poorer.
So, I want to share with you five things that you can do to avoid overspending during this Christmas season.
- Carefully assess your bank account and ask yourself, “Can I afford to spend any money during this christmas season or can I repurpose or reuse the things I already have?”
- Reorganize your home and get rid of all the unnecessary stuff by selling or donating. You can also make a list of the essential things that you and your family need.
- Make a budget and make up your mind to stick to it.
- Avoid internet shopping. If you need to purchase items on the internet, first select the items and wait a few days before buying. Chances are when you return to complete your sale, some of the items will be less appealing.
- Avoid participating in gift exchange at work or church. I believe this tend to encourage unnecessary spending. Instead, look around your neighborhood and identify people who are in need and surprise them with a gift. This simple act of kindness is the true essence of Christmas.
- Do not celebrate a baby in a manger but celebrate a fully grown man who went meekly to the cruel cross to die for the sins of humanity. By remembering the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, you will be more grateful to God for life instead of things.
With these few tips I guarantee that you will enjoy a more satisfying and peaceful Christmas season.
