Happy Emancipation Day!
Today, the British Virgin Islands will be celebrating their 65th annual celebration of emancipation day.
Jamaica celebrated their emancipation day last Thursday, August 1, 2019.
Emancipation day signifies the end of slavery on August 1, 1834, in most Caribbean islands.
Jamaica Independence Day celebration is celebrated on August 6th. Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom on the 6th of August 1962.
The emancipation festival in the BVI is celebrated over ten days from July 25th to August 10th with August 5th to 7th being designated public holidays.
During this time the culture of the BVI is celebrated in grand style with local food fairs, beauty and cultural pageants, local music competition, gospel and folklore presentations, street parties (J’ouvert) and horse racing.
These all culminated in the grand event on August 5th in a colorful and festive parade.
The main highlight of the week of festivity is the Village which is the main entertainment spot for all the festivities.
Temporary Wooden booths are erected around the festival ground to serve food and drinks to the patrons.
The Village featured different popular local and international artists performing Reggae, Calypso, Soca, Gospel, Fungi, Steel Pan, and Latino music.
