Conquering The Spirit Of Fear

The above are two of the many famous quotations that are written about fear.

One popular Bible passage states that God has not given us the spirit of fear but power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

In spite of all these many encouraging words, many people are still battling fear and phobias.

People are afraid of everything whether real or imaginary.

Fear is a spirit that the serpent released in the Garden of Eden.

Thus began man’s battle with fear when he lost his relationship with the Creator as a result of disobedience.

The spirit of fear produces torment, and it will keep you in bondage.

Extreme fear or anxiety can lead to panic attacks with symptoms of hyperventilation (fast breathing), shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, and chest pain.

You may also feel nauseous with an upset stomach, or you may feel weak, dizzy or out of touch with reality.

I have battled with anxiety for many years and have experienced all the above symptoms.

Through prayer and fasting, God has taught me how to recognize this evil spirit and how to drive it out of my life.

As long as we live in this sinful world we will never get rid of fear, but as one of the above quotations implies we overcome fear by not allowing it to overpower us.

You can overcome fear by empowering yourself with the Word of God and with prayer.

Below is a sample prayer to help you conquer the spirit of fear.

Prayer to conquer fear

I stand on the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ, and I rebuke every demonic spirit that the enemy is trying to use against my life. I command every foul spirit to get out of my life and my house.

I stamp on the spirit of fear, anxiety, pride, and loneliness and I proclaim that by the blood of Jesus Christ, I am free from the bondage of sin and its trappings.

I declare in the mighty name of Jesus that no weapon that formed against me and my household shall prosper and every tongue that rises against me I condemn in the name of Jesus.

Heavenly Father, release the hornets nest among the enemies and create confusion and destruction among them.

I decree that I will be strong and courageous for the Lord my God will go before me as a mighty conquering Lion, and He will not leave nor forsake me.

I am surrounded by the army of the living God, and those who are with me are mightier in strength and number than those who are with them.

For you, O Lord, is my light and my salvation; you are the strength of my life; of whom will I fear?

When the enemies come against me, they will stumble and fall. If an army or war rise against me, my heart will not fear because I am confident in the Lord.

For in the time of trouble He will hide me in His pavilion; In the secret place of His tabernacle He will hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock. (Psalms 27)

Thank you, heavenly Father, that in the midst of trouble you will hide me so that I will not be fearful.

Thank you that you have given me the spirit of love, power, and a sound mind to conquer fear (2 Timothy 1:7).

Thank you, Lord, that your presence is always with me to guide, protect and keep me.

Lord, I bless your holy and righteous name. In Jesus name, Amen.

I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. (Psalms 34:4)
I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. (Psalms 34:4 NKJV)

Powerful Bible verses to combat the spirit of fear.

I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the Lord; the humble shall hear of it and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. I sought the Lord, and He heard me and delivered me from all my fears. (Psalms 34:1-4 NKJV)

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore, we will not fear, even though the earth is removed, and though the mountains are carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. (Psalms 46:1-3 NKJV)

Come, behold the works of the Lord, who has made desolations in the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire. The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge.  (Psalms 46: 7-8 NKJV)

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us. (1 John 4:18 NKJV)

Therefore, who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8: 35, 37-39 NKJV)

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Amen. (Psalms 23: 6)

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! (Psalms 34:8)
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him! (Psalms 34:8)

The Lord’s reply to your prayer

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!(Psalms 46:10)

But you, Israel, (put your name here) are My servant, Jacob (put your name here) whom I have chosen, the descendants of Abraham, My friend. You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest regions, and said to you,

‘You are My servant, I have chosen you and have not cast you away:  Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you,  I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

“Behold, all those who were incensed against you shall be ashamed and disgraced; They shall be as nothing, and those who strive with you shall perish.  You shall seek them and not find them— Those who contended with you.

Those who war against you shall be as nothing, as a nonexistent thing. For I, the Lord your God will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’ (Isaiah 41:8-13)

Since you were precious in My sight, You have been honored, and I have loved you; Therefore I will give men for you, and people for your life. (Isaiah 43:4)

Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, with loving-kindness I have drawn you. (Jeremiah 31:3)

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this, all will know that you are My disciples if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34)

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled; neither let it be afraid. (John 14:27)

“Peace, be still!” (Mark 3:39)
“Peace, be still!” (Mark 3:39)

  2. Thanks Beverly. We all have our own battles with fear. I have often leaned on those first 4 verses of Psalm 34 as well as Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my Salvation: whom shall I fear. God bless

  3. Beverley, you have much meat on the bone to think about regarding the spirit of fear. So often fear will keep us from doing what God has called us to do. The enemy rules by fear but God gives us love, power, and a sound mind. Your post has many nuggets in it. Thank you!
