In the beginning of existence before time began, the Spirit of the Lord was present and moved upon the face of the waters to bring order from chaos (Genesis 1:1-3).

The Spirit of the Lord is all around us.

We cannot see Him but we can feel and see His effect in our lives.

The prophet Joel prophesied that in the latter days the Lord will pour out His Spirit upon all flesh (Joel 2:28-29).

This prophecy was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost when the Spirit of the Lord (Holy Spirit) descended upon the disciples who were waiting together in the upper room.

As the Spirit of God infiltrated their being – body, soul, and spirit – they began to speak in different tongues and they became bold to declare the Word of God (Acts 2).

When you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour and He cleanse your heart, you become the dwelling place for the Spirit of the Lord.

Thus, the Lord will always be with you wherever you go.

Sometimes sin and iniquity defile the temple of God and He moves out of your heart.

But, He is still present around you, convicting you of sin and encouraging you to return to the fold.

Functions of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is to keep you unspotted in this world.

• Conviction

The Holy Spirit will convict you of sin, judgement and righteousness (John 16:7-11)

And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you. (2 Chronicles 24:20)

• Comforter

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of me: (John 15:26)

• Teacher

The Holy Spirit will give you the words to speak (2 Samuel 23:2).

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:26)

• Guidance

Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come. (John 16:13)

• Wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; (Isaiah 11:1-2)

• Established a standard against the enemy

So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. (Isaiah 59:19)

• To preach the good tidings, to deliver, to appoint and to liberate.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. (Isaiah 60:1-3)

• Rest from the enemies 

As a beast goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the Lord caused him to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name. (Isaiah 63:14)

• Liberty

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. (2 Corinthians 3:17)

The Spirit of the Lord is not dormant in your lives, but occasionally He will move within your spirit and give you power.

Throughout the Old Testament, when the Spirit of the Lord moved or came mightily upon a person, he performed powerful acts that he could not do on his own.

Manifestations of the Spirit of God in the lives of people

Othneil, Caleb’s younger brother, was able to judge, make war and deliver the Israelites from the enemy (Judges 3).

Gedeon gained courage to blew the trumpet to gather the men of war and to formulate strategies to fight the enemy (Judges 6).

When the Spirit of the Lord came upon Samson, He gained supernatural strength to tear lions to pieces and to slew the enemies (Judges 14-15)

When the Spirit of the Lord came upon Saul after God anointed him to be king over Israel, he prophesied as if he was one of the prophets (1 Samuel 10).

After David was anointed king to replace Saul, the Spirit of the Lord came upon him and remained with him from that day forward (1 Samual 16:13).

The prophets of God gained power to prophesy, judge and to reveal sin in a person’s life or in the nation when the Spirit of the Lord moved upon them.

But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin (Micah 3:8)

The Spirit of the Lord can move you to different places as He did Phillip and John (Acts 8:39; Revelation 1).

I believe that the Spirit of God will caught up the believers to meet Christ in the air when He returns (1 Thessalonians 4:7).

Wherever you are and whatever situation that you find yourself, the Spirit of the Lord will always be with you.

Therefore,

Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s. (2 Chronicles 20:14-15)

I pray that the Spirit of the Lord will move upon you to manifest all His power in your life.
