That Still Small Voice

2–3 minutes

The listening ear, that Still Small Voice,
Is what we need, for our hearts to rejoice.
The Word of God, His Love Letter to us,
We should read it in Faith,
And in Him put our trust.

This next poem is by M. D. Clayburn, and as you can see by the language used that it had been written long ago. I came across it during my devotional time with the Lord yesterday morning right after I wrote my short poem above, and I thought it was appropriate and more in depth of what I had written, and how I was feeling at the time, and wanted to add it along with my post, in hopes it will add a special touch from God to your day. Here it goes……

I want the proven certainties
To soothe the soul’s deep cries;
And not man’s vain philosophies
Based only on surmise.

I want a book that is inspired
In which to posit faith;
And not some mutilated scroll,
Or literary wraith.

I want the calm assurance of
A voice from beyond the dust.
A voice from out eternity
In which to place my trust.

For when I come, at eventide,
To Jordans swollen stream,
I want the tested verities,
And not some mystic dream.

This mortal life is far too brief,
Eternity too vast,
To follow human sophistries
And lose the soul at last!

Then give me back the Holy Book
By inspiration penned;
I’m through with fabled falsities,
And allegoric trend.

It is always good to spend time in Gods Word and be attentive to that still small voice which speaks to our hearts within……Β for it can make all the difference in the world in a moment of time.

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before theΒ Lord. And, behold, theΒ Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before theΒ Lord; but theΒ LordΒ was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but theΒ LordΒ was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but theΒ LordΒ was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:11-12)

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” (John 10:27)

For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. (Psalm 43:21)

As forΒ God, his way is perfect;Β the wordΒ ofΒ theΒ LordΒ is tried: he is a buckler to allΒ them that trust in him. (2 Samuel 22:31)

  1. Beverley, I love that “still small voice” verse. I think of it together with, “Be still, and know that I am God.” They are so soothing and comforting!

    The John 10:27 verse you quoted reminded me of a book I read a few years ago. I think you might like it. If you’re like me, you have no experience with sheep — zero, zilch. See if you can find a copy of “Lessons from a Sheepdog,” by W. Phillip Keller. He writes from experience with sheep and presents a lovely image of God/Jesus Christ as the shepherd and we as His sheep. One thing that jumped out at me in the book is when he writes about how a sheep knows the voice of its shepherd. I think you would like the book. It helped me to have a deeper understanding of the shepherd and sheep relationship.

    Thank you for your comment janetsm. I’m always listening for that still small voice very early in the morning when it is quiet, before all the noise of the world comes crashing in. It reminds me as well of Gods Words Be still and know that I Am God…..then worry and fret just float away.

    I also agree with you about ‘Lessons From a Sheepdog’ by Philip Keller. That book was given to me by my sister about 20 years ago and highly recommended it as well for the same reason. Have a wonderfully blessed weekend. πŸŒΎπŸƒ

  3. The Lord will speak to us in unexpected ways and sometimes we miss the voice of God especially when He speaks to us in a still small voice. The Lord is not necessarily in the shouts and loud noise. Thank you, Susan for these two lovely poems.

    So true, thank you. It’s that precious time alone with the Lord when the hush of the Holy Spirit flows within, and the words come out. May God continue to bless you in all you do and share with others. πŸ™‚
