“Mothers, Let your Works Praise You at the Gates”
For over a hundred years, mothers all around the world were celebrated on a special day called ‘Mother’s Day’. It is that time of year where mothers are celebrated for all their hard work in raising their children.

Any woman can have a child, but it takes a strong woman to be a mother. You do not have to give birth to children, you just need to have the patience, wisdom and nurturing care to become a mother. If anyone looks up to you as a woman and honors you as a woman, you are a mother.

The greatest legacy that a mother can leave her children is not money or property but is the moral values that they can instill in their children. My mother did not possess material wealth or belongings, but she lived a virtuous and upright life that exemplified godliness. This is the legacy that my siblings and I inherited from her.

After she died in 2008, I asked the Lord for a double portion of her spirit even though I did not have the full knowledge of the characteristics of her spirit. On the day that the Lord gave me my request, He revealed to me my mother’s spirit.

It was then that I realized that I had inherited a legacy that was more precious and valuable than gold or diamonds. I thank God every day for my mother and it is my greatest desire to leave this same legacy for my children — a godly life.

This poem that I have written is in memory of my mother and is dedicated to all the mothers. Remember a mother does not necessarily give birth; a true mother gives love. Happy mother’s day to all the ladies who give love. May your love continue to grow until it covers the entire world.

REFLECTIONS OF AN OLD PURSE

I found an old purse all tattered and torn,
Among the discarded remnants of grief.
I opened its fragile compartments and
Out fell a portrait of love so tender and dear.
It was an image of struggles;
It was a reflection of humility,
A visual representation of a woman
Who endured great trials and heartaches;
She was the embodiment of a survivor.

This ragged old purse suitable only for the trash
Held a treasure of bittersweet memories of a childhood
Filled with enchanted dreams but challenging reality.
It was a reminder of a woman who gained strength through hardships;
Resoluteness from afflictions and victory from her faith.
She was an example of a woman of virtue.

And who can find a virtuous woman for her price is far above rubies?
She was like a merchant ship that brought her food from afar.
She awoke while it was yet dark and provided meat for her household.
She watched over the ways of her household and did not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rose up and called her blessed:
Strength and honor were her clothing and she rejoiced in (the time of her life).
She opened her mouth with wisdom and on her tongue was the law of kindness.
(Prov.31:10, 14, 27)

A tear of gratitude fell from my eyes as
I stared at this symbolic representation of my mother;
And I marveled in the knowledge that
My life had been molded by a messenger from God.
Suddenly the patent covering of this old purse began to peel rapidly away;
And as each layer fell lifelessly to the floor
So did all the trappings of financial worries and anxieties.
When at last the final piece fluttered insignificantly to the floor
It carried the curse of poverty.
I was delivered – free from the bondage of LACK.

I owed my enriched life to a mother, so faithful and true,
Who even after she had left this world behind
Send me one last legacy from the Lord:
The blessings of PROSPERITY.
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain. (Riches are an illusion):
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
Give her the fruit of her hand and let her own works praised her in the gates. (Prov. 31: 30 – 31)
