God’s Provision: Lessons from Elijah and the Widow

Who provides food for the raven, when its young ones cry to God, and wander about for lack of food? (Job 38:41)

God provided a raven to feed Elijah during the drought in Israel. The raven brought Elijah bread and meat in the morning and evening, and he drank from a nearby brook.

Note carefully that the brook dried up but the food supplied by the raven did not stop.

It was possible for the Lord to miraculously create springs in the desert to provide water for Elijah?

Nothing is impossible with God because He said that He will make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert to take care of you. (Isaiah 43:19)

However, God did not perform this miracle for Elijah because He also wanted to bless the widow at Zarephath also. So the Lord sent Elijah to the widow to for food. (1 Kings 17)

Unfortunately, the widow did not have any food except a handful of flour and a little oil that she was going to use to bake a little cake for herself and son.

Interestingly, the widow was ready to get Elijah a cup of water even though she had limited water due to the drought in the land.

As a result of the widow’s obedience Elijah prophesied to her that, “The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.’ ”(1 Kings 17:14 KJV)

The widow had abundant food for herself, her son and Elijah to last her until the end of the drought.

Another interesting observation about this passage is why God used an ‘unclean bird’ to feed Elijah?

Where did God send the raven to get the meat and bread?

The Bible states that the Lord provides for the birds of the air (Matthew 6:26).

Ravens usually eat the meat of dead animals, but I don’t believe that Lord would feed Elijah with decomposing meat.

  1. I think of the beginning of Elijah’s journey and how God sent an angel to baje bread and give him a cup of cold water. We may never know whete the raven got the food, ( or why he didn’t eat it). We do know that whether angel, raven or widow that God always provided, protected, and blessed Elijah. Thanks for this great question!

  2. Hmmm…. that’s an excellent point about the raven and the meat of dead animals. I don’t think I’ve ever thought about that aspect before, but I believe God provided fresh meat for the raven to take to Elijah that day.
