The word mercy in the English dictionary has several meanings. These are compassionate, kindly forbearance, pity, benevolence, kindness, favor (Dictionary.com).

When I think about the Lord three of these meanings stand out and they are compassionate, kindly forbearance, and favor.

The compassion of the Lord never fails and it is renewed every morning (Lamentation 3:22). It is because of His long-suffering and Hid tender mercies that we are not consumed.

The Lord’s anger is reserved for His enemy and workers of iniquities who refused to repent but His mercy extends to everyone who seeks Him in repentance.

The question is, do you trust the mercy of God? Do you believe that He is capable of saving you from the vilest sin?

When I ponder upon these questions the following scripture verses resonate in my heart.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path (Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV)

Indeed, our understanding is finite while God’s understanding is infinite.

Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite (Psalms 147:5 NKJV).

Because of God’s infinite understanding, His thoughts are not the same as ours nor are His ways similar to ours.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” says the Lord (Isaiah 58:8-9 NKJV)

Our great omnipotent Creator neither faints nor becomes weary. His understanding is unsearchable (Isaiah 40:28). 

Consequently, He is long-suffering and will never become too tired of our mistakes but will always extend mercy towards us.

But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children, to such as keep His covenant, and to those who remember His commandments to do them. (Psalms 103: 17-18 NKJV)

Whenever I have a problem, I tend to think of all the ways that it could be solved. I would constantly go over the situation trying to figure out how God should solve it.

However, when God finally solved my problems, it is usually not in the way I imagined it would be done.

Most times it is the opposite of my plans. I then realized that I had wasted precious time and energy stressing over the problem.

Whenever I depend on myself to solve my problems, I am leaning on my own understanding.

If you depend solely on your understanding you will either overwork yourself or worry yourself to death (Proverbs 21:16; 23:4).

We must learn to depend on God’s understanding.

Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. (Proverbs 8:14).

Is it possible to understand God?

Humans do not possess the capability to comprehend God but when you develop an intimate relationship with Him He will anoint you with the spirit of wisdom and revelation to know Him (Proverb 9:10; Ephesians 1:17-21).

When you trust in the Lord with all your heart and soul you will be at peace in this world (Proverbs 17:27).

For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. (Psalms 103:11-14)

As for man, his days are like grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children, to such as keep His covenant, and to those who remember His commandments to do them. (Psalms 103:15-18)

I pray that the Lord will pour out His spirit of wisdom and revelation upon you so that you will receive knowledge of Him.

I pray that you will understand His purpose for your life and you will understand the richness of the inheritance that He has for you.

I pray that you will have confidence in the everlasting mercy of God to you.
