Prayer Of Repentance

The year 2019 is a year of prayer so I will focus on prayer points during the entire month of January. This morning’s devotion will focus on the importance of praying for restoration when you sin.

Prayer for restoration when you sin

All of us are susceptible to sin because we were born with the sin nature inherited from Adam. It is easy to fall into sin, but you do not have to remain in that sinful state.

You can admit your faults and ask the Lord to forgive you. The Lord is willing and ready to forgive. However, if you refused you will eventually face the judgment of God.

The children of Israel became impatient when Moses remained on the mountain of God for a long time. They decided to coerced Aaron into building a golden calf to worship.

They had broken one of the commandments of God while the Lord was writing them on the tablet of stone. The Lord was angry with the people and threatened to destroy them.

But Moses pleaded to God on behalf of the people and He relented. God gave the Israelites a choice – life or death?

Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.”

And the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book. Now, therefore, go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, My Angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit for punishment, I will visit punishment upon them for their sin.” (Exodus 32:31-34)

David’s prayer of repentance when he sinned

Have mercy upon me, O God,
According to Your lovingkindness;
According to the multitude of Your tender mercies,
Blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my transgressions,
And my sin is always before me.
Against You, You only, have I sinned,
And done this evil in Your sight—
That You may be found just [a]when You speak,
And blameless when You judge.

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin, my mother conceived me.
Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts,
And in the hidden part, You will make me to know wisdom.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Make me hear joy and gladness,
That the bones You have broken may rejoice.
Hide Your face from my sins,
And blot out all my iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence,
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
And sinners shall be converted to You.

14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
The God of my salvation,
And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth shall show forth Your praise.
16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it;
You do not delight in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,
A broken and a contrite heart—
These, O God, You will not despise.

18 Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion;
Build the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness,
With burnt offering and whole burnt offering;
Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar. (Psalms 51)
