Tamar married Judah’s first son who died as a result of his iniquities. The custom of Israel was that if a man died before he had children with his wife, then the brother of the dead husband must marry his wife and bore children with her to carry on his name.
Judah’s second son dishonored the rule by spilling his sperm on the floor. Consequently, the Lord killed him. Judah also dishonored Tamar by not allowing his third son to marry her when he was older. Tamar decided to trick Judah by disguising herself as a prostitute to so that she would become pregnant with him.
Three months later her secret was revealed, and the people threatened to burn her for adultery. Before they lit the fire, she showed them the items that she had received from Judah as a pledge for payment for her service and declared that she is with child by the man who owned the items. Judah recognised his personal things and was ashamed of his actions. (Genesis 38)
This story reminded me of the woman who was caught in adultery and the men brought her to Jesus to get His opinion before they stoned her. But Jesus knowing that these men were just as guilty as the lady said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” (John 8:7). Men will condemn you but God will not.
When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”
She said, “No one, Lord.”
And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” (John 8:10-11)
