One God, One Love!
“The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell. It goes beyond the highest star and reaches to the lowest hell. The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win; His erring child He reconciled and pardoned from his sin.
O love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall forevermore endure – The saints’ and angels’ song.”
Whenever I think about the love of God the above words from the hymn kept ringing in my mind. What exactly is God’s love and how can you experience it? Do you view God’s love as separate from the love between a husband and wife or between a parent and child?
Scholars claim that there are four types of love and the love from the Lord which they called Agape is one of them. The others are Eros meaning intimate or sexual love between a husband and wife; Phillia – affectionate love regarding friendship and storge – love between parents and children.
When I considered the above definitions of love I realized that we have been deceived. If your love is based on your circumstances and the individual, it will not last.
Many relationships and marriages are broken because the love was based on the flesh – observation and feelings. Some mothers abandon their children because hardship and trials can quickly erode their love for their children. Likewise, friendships are quickly broken when materialistic things such as money come between the friendship.
These types of love easily fade because they originated in the hearts of men. But the love which comes directly from the heart of God cannot be destroyed. It will be like a spring bubbling up inside of you continually.
Therefore, you need to seek God to receive His love in your heart before you can love anyone else.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (1 John 4:7-8)
There is only one true love, and it is personified in God. Hence, this love has all the characteristics of God which are mercy, endurance, forgiving, humility, obedience and is everlasting
This love is potent, and the Lord must circumcise or purify your heart to receive it. (Deuteronomy 30:6)
When you obey God’s word and develop a relationship with Him, He will perfect His love in your heart. (1 John 2:5)
How do you know when you do not have the love of God in your heart?
- You prefer the honor and praise of men than God. (John 5:41-43; 12:43)
- The hypocrites. Those who live a pretentious life (Luke 11:39-44)
- When you follow after the devil and is disobedient to God and do not allow Him to be your Father. (John 8:42; 1 John 3:10)
- You do not believe in Jesus Christ. (1 John 5: 1-3)
- You do not help your brother who is in need. (1 John 3:16-17)
Advantages of having the love of God.
- You will always have hope. (Romans 5:5)
- Absolutely nothing in this world can separate you from the love of God. (Romans 8:38-39)
- You will become more than a conqueror. (Romans 8:37)
- You will be kind to everyone. (Titus 3:4-8)
- You will receive eternal life. (1 John 5:11-13)
- You will love your brethren in words and deeds regardless of their circumstances. (1 John 3:13-24)
Having God’s love within your heart will allow you to express genuine love to others. For example, the Holy Spirit within your heart will identify the spouse that God prepared for you because they will also have the Love of God in their hearts.
Both of you will have the same mind towards God, and you will experience the best intimacy than the love that exists in the world.
Keep yourself in the love of God by building up your faith and by praying in the Holy Spirit. (Jude 1:20-21)
Do not become confuse with the world classification of love because everything in the world is the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. They are not from the Father but are of the world. (1 John 2:16)
