Building Your Dream Home

For over fourteen years my greatest dream was to build my dream house on top of the hills of St Ann, Jamaica overlooking the tranquil Caribbean Sea. I spent many hours watching home and garden television shows to get ideas of how I want my dream home to be designed and decorated. I even created a portfolio where I placed pictures of my favorite designs and furniture.

My dreams were very close and dear to me and they motivated me despite my trying situations at home and at work. While living in my adopted homeland of Tortola, I felt obliged to squeeze my family into cramp and inexpensive apartments in order to save as much money as possible to realize my dream. My family and I were not happy but I thought that the sacrifice was well worth the future dream house.

I was living a substandard lifestyle while dreaming about a full and rich lifestyle in the future. While denying myself and family a comfortable standard of living to appease my dream, the months turn into years and several years past and my children were getting bigger and my dream was not yet fulfilled. We were outliving my dream but I was too distracted by my aspiration to realize this.

Redefining the dream house

Finally after my family separated, I gave my complete life to God and he told me to kill all my dreams and desires and accept the plan that he had in store for me. God’s plan for my life was not possible for me to achieve. When I told this to the Lord he agreed with me but he also added that what is impossible for me is possible for him. I decided to trust the Lord.

The Lord told me that he will redefine the dream home for me. He said that a dream home does not consist of the physical structure of the house and luxury furniture. A dream home is one in which I provide my family with a home filled with love, warmth, comfort and peace with God in control.

The Lord further stated that it does not matter whether or not you rent or own your house, it can become your dream home.

At the time that the Lord taught me this I was living in a cramp one bedroom apartment with two teenagers. They were very uncomfortable and they lived miserable with each other. I was happy in this cramp quarters because I had finally found peace in my life but God was not happy with my circumstances.

So he miraculously provided a large two bed room apartment in the same complex where I was living. I thought that I could not afford this larger apartment but the Lord promised to pay the rent for me and he has been doing this for almost three years and he will continue to do so.

When I moved into my new apartment each of my children received their own room. My daughter received one of the bedrooms and I divided the master bedroom into two rooms – one for myself and one for my son. Suffice it to say we were all happy because we had our own space and privacy.

The Lord then taught me how to communicate with my children in an amicable way and how to listen to them. All three of us created a bond of trust and unity. They felt comfortable to talk to me about most things including their problems and I also share with them everything. My life became an open book for them to read and learn and I believe that they appreciate it.

I therefore wish to encourage parents to think less about building the physical structure of a dream house and to spend more time building a foundation of love, respect, peace and unity in your home with God as the head of your family. This is the ultimate dream home that you can ever provide for yourself and children. I am enjoying the benefits of mine and I hope you will also.

  1. Thanks for sharing your story with us Doreen. A real home for me is not so much about the physical structure but one in which there is love, togetherness, happiness and peace.

Many live in their dream house but are yet to realise their dream of a happy home.

    Blessings! 🙂
