During the Old Testament period, the Lord gave Moses strict rules forbidding His people to eat or touch the unclean things (see Leviticus 5-11).

The Lord wants His people to know the difference between the things that are holy and unholy and the things that are clean and unclean.

The Lord expected us to know these differences also although the emphasis is not on the physical but on the spiritual.

What are some of the unclean things that believers must avoid?

• Unclean spirits and doctrines of devils.

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron. But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. (1 Timothy 4:1-2, 7)

• The works of the flesh.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, ⁱdolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21)

Unclean spirits are driven out by Jesus (see Mark 1:27). They have no place in the life of a child of God.

God has called us to holiness. We can achieve holiness when we walk in the Spirit and manifest the fruit of the Spirit.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such, there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Since we are in Christ and have crucified the flesh, let us live and walk in the Spirit.

Wherefore, come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. (2 Corinthians 6:17-18)
